DEPOSITION REACTORS

DIAMOND / Deposition Reactors

High-purity diamonds from the reactor

The synthetic production of diamonds can be realized by various methods. However, they differ with respect to quality and quantity.
The microwave-based plasma CVD method is currently regarded as a the method for the deposition of man-made gemstones, optical-, electronic- and quantum-grade diamonds. Diamonds are chemically synthesized using methane and hydrogen. To add color (blue, yellow, green, red) or to tune the conductivity of diamond, extrinsic elements (dopant atoms) like boron, phosphorus, nitrogen, silicon and others are added to the plasma.

The development of novel microwave reactors is now at the core of various activities for commercially more attractive and competitive deposition of single crystal diamonds. This is also a result of the new generation of solid-state microwave generators which will replace magnetrons soon. These generators are energy efficient, show long lifetimes and can be combined to form phase-locked microwave discharges.

New bell-jar- or disc-CVD microwave reactors for high power density plasma deposition on large areas will replace conventional systems as a result of the growing markets (gemstones) and due to new industrial applications of diamond.
